ASSIGNMENT 1: Dialogues in Design
The University of Zagreb is hosting their renowned DESIGN Conference in partnership with the Accreditation
Council of Trinidad and Tobago and the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards for the 15th biennial
instance of this event. Presenters are invited to further the discussion and development of all aspects of
design-based theory and practice, toward process, situational and policy-oriented ends.
However, as a departure from their usual centring on design-based disciplines, Visual Arts, Graphic Design,
Visual Culture Studies and Human Communication Studies are also areas for dialogue and consideration. In
addition to this change, suitable undergraduate and postgraduate students within each of these
acknowledged disciplines are also invited to present their latest research. One of the overarching goals of the
DESIGN Conference is to provide a forum for academics and industry practitioners alike to share ongoing
research and debate on design-related and visually-centred issues.
Given the increasing interdisciplinarity of design-based theory and practice, the DESIGN Conference provides a
space for open discussion and collaboration among a diverse range of disciplines in the humanities, social
sciences, business, law, and information technology. As a conference presenter, you are tasked with
presenting a proposal of your intended research and final conference paper which focuses on a relevant
design-based issue of scholarly or industry interest. Based on the quality of your submission, your final work
will be formally published in the proceedings from the conference.

Why researching this topic is important?
Elderly people tend to have a negative perception towards their interactions with mobile phone devices. It is believed that the aesthetic experience of such devices can change this perception and have a positive impact towards their preference along with improving the elderly’s usability of a mobile phone device.
