Part B is “Group Report”. The “Group Report” should be submitted as a single piece of work by each group.
Group Report should carry Cover Page and Table of Content.  The first page (Cover Page) should include the following information: o Title

o Your Names and Student Numbers  o Course  o Academic Year

Pages must be numbered for ease of cross reference.
The report must be word processed.
If any additional assumption(s) is needed you should clearly state the assumption(s) made at the beginning of each task and justify your assumption(s).
In your drawings and calculations clarity is the utmost importance.
Use diagrams and sketches as much as possible. They should be placed in appropriate place. A diagram or sketch says a thousand words. So use them.
Computer/hand drawings relevant to your design to be cut A4 size and placed in appropriate place and not at the back of your report. If width bigger than A4, then fold them longitudinally. The important thing is that they must be inspected with least inconvenience.
All figures/illustrations need to be numbered must have appropriate captions and their source must be cited.
Calculations by hand. Hand calculations with a dark blue ink or dark black. Avoid pencil and red ink.
Consult Plagiarism guidelines
Edit and proof-read work prior to submission
The text must be referenced using Harvard style (guidance available on the library website)

PART B – Group Report
Part B of the project is group report. i.e. to be carried out and presented on a group work basis.

Introduction:

The project is a 3-storey college building project to be built on multiple campuses in UK (See Figure 1- Drawing is not in scale).

Figure 1: Plan; Section A-A; Section B-B. All dimensions are in meter.

The aim of this task is to design an economical and flexible college building that can be adjusted to different pedagogical models and learning styles. The client is a promoter of sustainability and very keen on sustainable conceptual design and sustainability issues. It is intended that the school will be energy efficient, carbon neutral and will achieve a high BREEAM rating. The college building is to provide 40 classrooms located on three levels, equally divided either side of a hall and administration facilities. The 3-level building can accommodate up to 1000 students, may be reconfigured for other communal functions. The classrooms are to be accessed from a central corridor at each level. Columns are only permitted around the perimeter of the building and on the wall lines. The Hall should be column free. An external enclosed staircase is required at each end of the central corridor. The client is seeking an attractive facade for the structure but has made no decision regarding the type of cladding to be used. Nor have any planning restrictions been placed on the cladding material. The choice, however, must be justifiable and the cladding chosen has to be cost effective.
Assessment:

B-1)

Working as a group you are requested to conceptually design this sustainable college. You need to provide a report accompanied by drawings for your proposed college building indicating the reasons for your choice recommended to the client and justifications. The sustainability issues/technologies should be reflected in your set of drawings for the conceptual design. Your report must include the followings:

Explain structural system (these should be shown/reflected in your drawings as well) including but not limited to:

Structural form/type and structural elements o Flexibility of plan – Is the school adapted for alternative layouts?
Is the structural system economical
How does the system help with natural lighting and natural ventilation and thermal performance

Explain material choice for different elements (structural and no structural) including claddings (these should be shown/reflected in your drawings) including but not limited to:

How the material choice contributes to the proposed structural form o Source of the material; what happens at the end of the life of the material, etc. o Does the chosen material contribute to your other design goals (e.g.

thermal mass, sustainability, economy, etc.)

Suggest and explain sustainable technologies to be incorporated to the proposed school design (these should be shown/reflected in your drawings).

Summarise in a table format at least SIX negative environmental impacts that could arise during the construction of the school. For each impact, propose a possible mitigating measure.

Part B1 should be maximum 8 pages (including drawings)

B-2)

Assuming that the external walls of the building are built of 50 mm air cavity brick and block masonry wall with 15 mm plaster internally. Choose your own brick and block.

Calculate the U values for the exposed wall with air cavity.

Determine additional insulation needed with 15 mm plasterboard if the U value for the fully insulated exposed wall should be 0.30 W/m2

Calculate the Total Fabric Heat Loss if the U values for the walls, floor and roof are 0.30, 0.25 and 0.20 W/m2K respectively. Given that U value for the glazed window with low emissivity is 1.8 W/m2K. Also, assume that the insulation for the roof is between the rafters.

Assume the following data:

Internal Surface Resistance           0.123 m2K/W
External Surface Resistance         0.055 m2K/W
Conductivity of Brick                        0.84 W/mK
Conductivity of Plaster                    0.5 W/mK
Conductivity of Block                       0.22 W/mK
Conductivity of Insulation               0.035 W/mK
Conductivity of Plasterboard          0.14 W/mK
Resistance of 50mm air space      0.18 m2K/W
