1) The issue of gender in interpersonal violence has been debated academically for a long time.

A case study
Consider the case of Jack (33) and his partner Alana (29), who have a son Adam (4) and are expecting their second child. Alana has asked Jack to attend counselling to ‘learn to control his temper’. Their arguments have escalated and become more frequent over the years. Jack is both verbally and physically abusive. Jack is very remorseful after any incident in which he has physically abused Alana and always promises that ‘it will never happen again’. Alana feels she has to tiptoe around Jack and is worried about the effect of all this arguing on their son.
Drawing on one/both theoretical frameworks ( attachment perspectives and the feminist perspectives) we have covered in class, present a well-condensed discussion of the case study by considering:
• his need for power and control
• what might make it hard for her to leave the relationship
