Blue Velvet is the film directed by David Lynch in 1986. It is considered as one of the best Lynch’s works (Runyon). The movie begins with the episode that a young man returns to his hometown after a long absence due to the sudden stroke of his father. Soon, he finds a cutoff human ear in a field. Dissatisfied with only one enthusiasm of police, the boy starts his own unauthorized investigation with the help of the police detective’s daughter. They were surprised to find out a criminal underground in their quiet serene town. The footprints lead them to a beautiful and mysterious woman and her partner, the violent drug dealer. Strange and unhealthy love appears between the young men and this woman.
This work is full of mystery, eroticism, fears, and intrigues. Blue Velvet is a love story, very grim, intense, and attractive at the same time. The film has approved David Lynch’s style which brought him worldwide fame ("Post-Modernism and Authorship"). The absurd atmosphere combines the uniquely elegant, bright and expressive forms that create an explosion on the screen. One cannot review the film in terms of “good” or “bad” as it touches the deepest strings of a soul. The happy end is the director’s mockery on American ostentatious prosperity. Thus, everything happened before is a real icky truth. Blue Velvet cannot be compared with other directors’ films despite how great they are. It stands apart from the rest drawing attention to something that people avoid in usual life.
