Statistical Package for the Social Sciences popularly known as SPSS is a software package used for the analysis of data to generate logical information from the raw data. The SPSS software package can run a wide array of analysis ranging from frequencies, correlation, regression, t test, chi square test and many more. With all these statistical functionalities, SPSS makes the lives of researchers and data analysts a lot easier. In addition to the figures, the package is able to generate charts, graphs and tables so as help in easy graphical analysis of the data (Andy, 2005). Background
The development of the SPSS software as we know it started in Stanford University in the late 1960s. Three men who were Norman Nie, Dale Bent and Hadlai Hull developed the original software system refereed as Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). This startup was necessitated by the need to analyze large amount of social science data, as a result they developed the software to do it. Like wild fire, the software appealed to other students in other universities and finally ended up being popular with everyone analyzing research (Arthur, 2007).
According to Arthur (2007), the three developers came up with a manual in the 1970s and it surprisingly took off. Its popularity did not only spread from universities but also into other sectors and fields such as government and the private sector. In the 1980s, the version of the software was moved to the personal computer, and from there henceforth it has been a great hit.
Hypothesis testing
Hypothesis testing is one of the most important parts of data analysis using SPSS. First and foremost the researcher/analyst should state the null hypothesis. An example of a null hypothesis:

The next process goes on to test the variables for their significant level. Then the value is compared to the p value which is usually 0.05. Finally, we reject or accept the null hypothesis (George, 2004).
