According to McMinn ( 1996) there are four basic ways which a counselor can invoke to confront sin namely; silence, pondering, questioning, use of scripture reference, use of basic doctrine and direct censure. Amongst these methods direct censure has a major disadvantage in that it can completely erode the trust between the counselor and client; some clients when directly censured tend to feel offended (McMinn, M. R. 1996)
He further argues that sometimes silence can be golden. When a counselor fails to comment on anything said by the client it forces the client to review the content of what they have actually said. This shows that the counselor has taken an impartial stand and is not ready to neither dictate what is right or wrong nor judge the client. The main objective in counseling is not to dictate to clients what is wrong or right but ensure that the client is psychologically and emotionally healthy by use of biblical teachings. Feinberg, J. S. (2004).
What form or forms of confrontation should be used?
In confrontation of sin it is essential that the counselor keeps in mind the main purpose and objective, which is to bring redemption, healing and redemption. Counselors should reevaluate their motives and reasons before they confront a client. It is argued that at all times the counselor should have the best interests of his client at heart when selecting the best form of confrontation to use. The desire to lead a client to healing and restoration of the clients’ social and spiritual relationships should guide the technique (McMinn, M. R. 2008).
In certain instances confrontation is usually equated to direct censure. Direct censure may involve actual verbal exposure of the sin which by extension presents a huge risk to the counselor especially if the client was not prepared to receive this information. The meaning of confrontation encompasses various approaches such as; silence questioning, pondering, visualization of end outcome and prayer. All this forms may be used to guide the client away from sinful behavior. Some of the forms of intervention include avoiding placing of blame, emphasizing on therapy, managing the anger and focusing on consequences (Finzel, H. 2007).
Conclusion
Counselors should always be sensitive and aware of their client feelings. They should carry out a detailed background study so as to understand their clients. If a counselor does not know his client well, it will be difficult to choose what approach to use in his session or even cause conflict between the counselor and client.
