UNIV 112
Mr. Brookman
Final Paper: Problems, Solutions and Ethics
There are a lot of problems in the world. Review the course readings for 112, including The Circle, and select a real world problem that needs to be fixed. Most students write about social issues. Everything is a social issue: technology, the environment, space exploration, you name it. Issues from the Circle such as privacy and data collection are fair game. Other electronics issues such as the violence in video games and the impact of social media are clichés to be avoided.
Step One: Begin with a research question. These help narrow the focus of your research, so that you are not looking at everything on a topic and, therefore, wasting your time. Example: What are the current problems in limiting the militarization of local police forces?
Step Two: After examining a variety of expert’s solutions to this problem (militarized police in the example above) in sources, chose one you think is best. Gather source information about the components of this solution. Be able to explain the solution. Know how it can be put in place and what risks and challenges are likely to arise. What are the benefits? What are the strongest points?
Step Three: AFTER you have done most of your research, chose one of the four ethical approaches from Unit One. Argue that, based on your self-selected ethical approach, the expert’s solution from Step Two is tenable and should be adopted, or that it must be stopped! (Do NOT research the ethics of your problem or solution. This paper tests your own ability to reason ethically, not someone else’s ability to do so.)
—————————————————————————————————————–For support use factual evidence and ideas from sources, current information related to the seriousness of the problem, and your own ethical reasoning and critical thinking.
This is a claim-centered academic argumentative paper. The claim should be the final sentence of your introduction. The claim MUST include the ethical approach from which you will be arguing. Your paper will fail if you do not argue from an ethical approach.
Find and use some quantitative data in the paper.
—————————————————————————————————————–The body of the paper shall be comprised of multi-paragraph sections (in most cases), each addressing a different point/idea that helps support your major claim. A good way to think of these is to imagine the reader’s question: “Why do you think that?” Your supporting ideas are simply reasons you think what you think about your topic. That’s all there is to it. Really.
—————————————————————————————————————–Sources MUST be appropriately cited according to MLA style. You MUST submit a bibliography of sources paraphrased and/or quoted from in your paper. You must use all elements of proper MLA formatting as well to earn a good grade.
Your sources can be a mix of scholarly sources (journal articles and scholarly books) and high quality substantive sources. One of your substantive sources can be non-print: a lecture or story in podcast form from TED Talks, RSA, Radio Lab, This American Life or The Big Think. Be sure to cite these properly.
Using the student essay example (Hacker pages 436-440) as your formatting model and Cole Williams’ fair trade coffee paper (Blackboard> Unit 3) as your content model, write a 5-7 page argument paper, using your 3-4 best sources.
