Each student is required to conduct and present a research project, which will be worth 100 of the course’s 450 points. The project shall have three basic components: 1) a literature review; 2) theory and hypotheses; 3) data analysis. A short introduction and conclusion should also be included in the finished product.
Literature Review
You are required to write a literature review containing no fewer than 10 separate sources. The literature you include should be relevant to your topic of study. The purpose of the review is to outline the previous research on the topic and serve as a frame for your own study. To that end, it should not be organized as a list of all research done on that question, but should logically tie various pieces together and serve as the setup for your own contribution. The literature review should be between 1.5-2 pages.
Theory and Hypotheses
Remember, your theory is a frame for how you think the world works with respect to your research question. It should be logically consistent, clear, and as simple as you can make it. The hypotheses should derive from your theory; that is, a hypothesis that has seemingly no relation to your theory is a poor hypothesis. You can have as few as 1 hypothesis but should not have more than 4 or 5, and all hypotheses should be labeled (“Hypothesis 1,” “Hypothesis 2,” etc.). The theory and hypotheses should take up no more than 2 pages.
Analysis
In this section you will outline what data you are using and present your results. If you are using quantitative data, the results should be presented in a table or with graphs. If you are using qualitative data, you should include a thorough write-up of your cases, drawing particular attention to your variables of interest and providing convincing evidence for your conclusions.The analysis should take no more than 2.5 pages, including any tables or figures.
General Guidelines
The paper should, all told, be between 5-8 pages, double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12 point font. This page total includes all tables and figures, but does not include your references.The references should be included in a works cited page at the end of the document that will not count toward the page total. Additionally, references cited in-text should be done so parenthetically.
