Be sure to distinguish between the type of government/society before the recent turmoil and the type of government that has now formed. We are going to take three cases: Egypt, Libya, and Syria and look at each one and try and figure out how each country either transitioned successfully, fell into war, or proceeded with successful brutal crack downs. This isn’t a perfect experiment as events in each country are still unfolding. However, we can see the direction each one is breaking. While doing your research, focus on how the various institutions (for example, the military in Egypt), individuals, and/or particular culture in each society affected the manner in which the leaders faced the uprising.
