OPTION THREE: OBAMA 2016 which is available thru net flix or possibly in Red Box locations. It was playing in theaters just before the election. It is a look at the rise of Obama and what America might look like in 2016 when Obama’s term ends.
Your specific assignment is:
Write a one page overview of the video describing what you feel is the major theme or message. You must make at least one citation or reference to get full credit for the assignment.
Write a second page tying the video to one of the major types of social movements which are briefly mentioned in the text and in a earlier part of this document.
Write a third page illustrating which Tricks of the Trade or Propaganda techniques were employed in the video to sell the message.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE TO SELL YOUR POINT OF VIEW ON A SOCIAL MOVEMENT
Sociologists Alfred and Elizabeth Lee found that when one is trying to sell a position on a social issue, or argue for a position or person, they can employ one of seven techniques to shape public opinion. They contend that the techniques should be subtle so the public is unaware they are being manipulated. These are frequently referred to as classic propaganda techniques.
NAME CALLING: Put a negative label on the opposition. Contend that the Republicans want grandma to die. Or contend that Democrats are hard core Socialists who want American to be a totally Socialist nation. The intention is to send a negative image of a person or an idea.
GLITTERING GENERALITY: This is the opposite of Name Calling. This involves speaking in broad general terms in such a way that a positive emotion is associated. For instance, say that someone is a True American. Say that the Democrats are truly the party representing the worker.
TRANSFER: Send a message that surrounds the product, idea or individual which the public really approves of. For example, surround a person or a candidate with American Flags, play patriotic music, show that the idea or movement is truly patriotic by talking about something wonderful or honorably historic and it will be associated with the movement or the person.
TESTIMONIALS: Tie a famous individual to the product, person or policy. Get a Hollywood celebrity to endorse something. Get a famous athlete to speak out. It is convincing.
PLAIN FOLKS: Sell the product, idea or policy by referring to average Americans. If mid America likes it, it should be good for everyone.
CARD STACKING: The intent of this is to give only positive information about what you support and only negative information about what you oppose. Make it sound as if your idea is the only rational choice.
BANDWAGON: The argument that “everyone is doing it” or everyone else is aboard”. People do not like to be odd man out. Sell them on the idea that everyone else is in agreement. Anyone who is not aboard is on the wrong track. This is a classic technique used to pressure people to jump aboard because everyone else is aboard
