Modelling Case Study (20%)
This coursework should be carried out individually and forms 20% of the overall module mark.
Answer the following question.
Select an example from the literature in which materials modelling has been used to gain a benefit. Examples you could select from may include the following – although this is not an exhaustive list:
• to predict the atomic structure and behaviour in a particular material
• to design a new alloy or a new coated system
• to assist in the accurate prediction of solidification of a component to form a high integrity casting
• to model the mechanical behaviour of a material system
• to understand how a material interacts with its environment.
Produce a 1 page mini-poster (printed up to a maximum size of A3) which explains the modelling techniques which have been used and the scientific principles on which they are based, why they have been used and why they have been successful.
Include in your poster careful reference to the journal papers, or other sources, which you use to find your example. Please also remember that any illustrations from the literature should also be referenced.
A template for the poster is available from the module LEARN page. Your poster should be submitted through the LEARN page no later than 5pm, Friday 18th March (end of week 7).

Marks will be evenly distributed between the following categories:
• description of the modelling techniques used
• explanation of scientific principles
• why the techniques have been used
• why the techniques have been successful
• visual appeal of the poster.
