History in Mathematics
Introduction:
Mathematics is a dynamic, evolving field of study. Many cultures have contributed to the development of mathematics over time. Research has shown that providing the historical context for a mathematics topic can help students better understand the concept and motivate them to learn.
For this task, you will select topics from several given mathematics subject areas and trace the topic’s development over time. You will create a resource that you can use when planning instruction to help students learn about the historical context of the mathematics topics. You will also conduct a more complete analysis of a single topic.
Requirements:
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.
You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.
A. Create a written narrative of the historical development of each mathematical domain using the attached "Graphic Organizer." Include significant figures and diverse cultures for each of the following domains:
1. number systems
2. algebra
3. geometry
4. calculus
5. discrete mathematics (e.g., Pascal’s triangle, logic, combinatorics, graphs)
6. probability/statistics
7. measurement
B. Investigate one of the following famous mathematics problems by doing the following:
• Fermat’s last theorem
• the four color theorem
• trisecting an angle
• the seven bridges of Königsberg
• the value of pi
• Zeno’s motion paradox
1. Describe the problem, including the origin of the problem.
Note: You may use images as necessary to support your description.
2. Discuss why the problem was or is important or interesting to mathematicians.
3. Explain the impact the problem had on the life of an individual who worked on it.
4. Discuss how the problem was finally solved, including when, by whom, and any breakthroughs that aided in finding the solution.
C. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
