How the Human Found the Offshore Oilfield

Offshore oilfields constitute of a substantial proportion of the wells that produce the oil needed for energy. These oilfields are important in the supply of the demand for oil globally, and are also inclusive of the world’s most important oilfields. The offshore oilfield that has the highest capacity in the world is the Safaniya offshore oilfield in Saudi Arabia. This oilfield has a capacity of 50 billion barrels of petroleum and churns out about 1.5 million barrels per day (Cunningham, Nick par 5). Offshore oil drilling entails a mechanical process where the well bore is drilled below the sea bed. This is usually used to refer to an extraction that takes place on the continental shelf, but is also used to refer to the drilling of oil below water bodies such lakes found within the continents. This proposal is concerned with finding out the origins of offshore oilfields and in particular how they were discovered oilfields?
Offshore oil fields have remained an important source of petroleum for the oil sector. A majority of the recently discovered oilfields are offshore. The offshore oilfields have the advantage of having a huge amount of water in the vicinity. Extraction and refining of petroleum require a lot of water. This makes the costs of drilling and refining oil in the offshore oilfields lower (Onwuka, Amanda et al. 120). There is a need to understand how these oilfields were discovered by petroleum explorers, though it can be postulated that the need for water and the cost of sourcing such resource in the oil wells found inland could have motivated the oil companies to seek out oil deposits in areas near large water masses. As stated earlier on the purpose of this study is to find out the process that led to the discovery of offshore oilfields. There are several objectives that this study will seek to fulfil. These include finding out the factors that led to the discovery of the offshore oilfield; finding out the proportion of petroleum that is extracted from the offshore oilfield on a global scale; determination of the cost of drilling oil offshore as opposed to the inland extraction of oil; and to establish the possible future of offshore drilling of oil and of the oil sector as a whole.
The rationale for this study is the fact that it has not been done before, may be due to scholars holding the assumption that studying the origins of offshore oilfields is trivial to the success of the players in the oil industry. The approach of this study is qualitative. Collection of data will use the documentary or historical analysis. Historical texts on the oil industry and how it has grown are to be used in this study to give the researcher insights into the circumstances that existed before the discovery of the offshore oil fields. Having a look at the methods that are applied in the drilling of oil in the inland oils and the strategies that are applied on the offshore wells and comparing them can help in the identification of the reasons why offshore drilling is considered commercially viable. An assumption that will be applied in this study is the supposition that it is easier to do offshore drilling, as there is a significant chunk of solid land mass, that has been displaced by water. The wells under the seabed are shallower compared to those inland.
