The prevalence of smoking

Health & Society (HLTH 1025) SP2 2017
Assessment #2 – Written Assignment 2 (30%)
1
Health and Society vs. The Nation
This second assignment provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate the skills you have
developed through this course in accessing, managing, and interpreting data. It will also provide an
opportunity to discuss in depth how the determinants of health can lead to differences in health
behaviours across population groups.
Each student needs to complete this assignment independently (i.e. as an individual).
The topic for this assignment is the prevalence of smoking.
This assignment is comprised of five (5) tasks.
Task 1: Compile data sets
This task requires you compile data sets from each of the following sources:
1. 2017 Health and Society Student Health Survey dataset
2. 2014-15 Australian National Health Survey (Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data)
smoking dataset
3. 2012-13 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (ABS data) smoking dataset
For this task, you will need to download three data sets, available under the “Resources” section of
the learnonline course site. You are also required to appropriately reference the data sources used.
Task 2: Create a summary table for your data
For this task, you will need to create a table in Microsoft Word to present summary statistics
according to age groups for each of the three population groups:
1. 2017 Health and Society student cohort;
2. 2014-15 Australian National Health Survey sample; and
3. 2012-13 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey sample.
The age groups by which you should present your data include: 1) 18-24 years; 2) 25-34 years; 3) 35-
44 years; 4) 45 years and over.
Note: you may need to combine data for the age group 45 years and over.

For this table, you will need to report for each population group by each age group the number and
proportion of those who are smokers.
The table below is an example of the kind of table you could create and format to present your data:
Table 1. Summary of smoking prevalence according to age groups for three Australian population
groups
Age group n (%)
2017 Health and Society student cohort 18-24 years

Task 3: Present your summary data in a graph
Create a graph (bar or column chart) in Excel to present the data summarised in the table in Task 2
for the prevalence of smoking. For this task, you should present the percentages (%) by age group
(not the n’s) in your graph.
Note: To create your graph from the data presented in Task 2, you will need to format your data in Excel
differently to that presented in your table for Task 2 to allow you to create an appropriate graph.
Task 4: Compare health status across the three population groups
In no more than 300 words, describe the data presented in Tasks 2 and 3 (the table and graph), and
compare the three population groups. This task should include a description of any similarities
and/or differences in the prevalence of smoking between your student cohort (2017 Health and
Society student cohort), Indigenous Australians and the total Australian population.
Note: The word count is a maximum (i.e., you will be penalised for any text over the stated word limit).
Task 5: Discuss the role of determinants of health and health literacy
In no more than 700 words, discuss the social, cultural and environmental determinants which
potentially contribute to differences in the prevalence of smoking between your student cohort
(2017 Health and Society student cohort), the Indigenous Australian population, and the total
Australian population. For your discussion, you may find it helpful to focus on one determinant for
each ‘category’ (e.g., income (social determinant), discrimination (cultural determinant), and
remoteness (environmental determinant)).
As part of your discussion, also address the relevance of health literacy to differences across the
three population groups. Your discussion should be informed by at least two appropriate peer
reviewed references.
Note: The health survey you completed and the ABS health survey from which many of the questions were
derived are rich sources of data. Appropriate inclusion of additional analysis of items contained within the
health surveys (Health and Society or ABS) to support your discussion will be rewarded.
Note: The word count is a maximum (i.e., you will be penalised for any text over the stated word limit). The
word count includes the in-text references but not the reference list.
