the research paper should be 3,000 words in length, and will address a topic of your choice related to the themes we cover in class. you should address a specific question, formulate a thesis statement and to clearly express an educated opinion on a particular issue. It will also test your understanding and use of the readings and the sources cited, as well as your ability to critically synthesize the academic material covered and to apply its concepts to specific questions.
so my topic is
”The Sectarianism in Iraq”
The specific question that I will address is
The Question: How did the call of peaceful demonstration based on socio-economic and political issues become replaced by brutal sectarian violence?
and my
Thesis Statement: The mobilization of such identities to justify repression and violence relies on facts, myths, symbols, and perceptions, all of which can be constructed and reconstructed depending on the context.
so this paper should include,
1- introduction:
•Introduce the topic (summary): present relative background, contextualize, tell what the topic is about. For example: Yemeni war: define it
• then address Your research question, ( I mentioned the question above)
• Define terms if necessary
• Explain the focus of your paper : the focus of the paper is sectarianism
• Why the topic is important
• Explain the purpose behind the topic
• Present a main claim or arguments (thesis statement) : single specific claim that you entire paper is supporting, directly answer the question , tells the reader how you are interpreting data, tell the readers what to expect.
2- Literature review
• here, we must have 4 categories and each category has 5 sources so in total, there should be 20 resources.
• For example, since we are talking about sectarianism in iraq, so in the first category there should be 5 sources that are talking about the historical events, then the second category should have 5 sources that are talking about conflicts between sunna and shite and so on. but keep in mind that I need 20 sources.
and show how these sources are relevant to my research paper. I agree or disagree, is it helpful?
3- Methodology,
• Quantitative data or method such as statistics/ data/ survey ( we want numbers) – numbers o elections) be creative
• Qualitative method: historical analysis, looking at secondary resources, interview paper in Iraq.
4- Outline:
• I need an outline that includes, introduction, 3 main arguments
and for each main argument I want 3 sub arguments and, then the conclusion
it should be in this form
part A
section 1
1.
2.
3.
part B
section 2
1.
2.
3.
part C
section 3
1.
2.
3.
5- the body part,
after doing the outline then start the body part.
the body part
• gathers and organizes evidence that support the thesis.
remember to link everything above to the thesis.
6- Conclusion,
• Summarize your paper.
and that’s it.
things to keep in mind
1- I want to see the 6 things that I mentioned above in the paper. (follow my instruction please)
2- don’t plagiarize because we will use a system that check plagiarism.
3- you must relate the issue or the topic (sectarianism in Iraq to our lectures) I will upload for you our lectures and try your best to relate the topic to the lectures.
4- the professor asked me to see Fanar Haddad’s work when he wrote about sectarianism in Iraq, she said it is useful.
5- keep in mind, our lecture(the things that I uploaded are not part of the references and are not part of the literature review. (not part of the 20 sources). just use in-text citation for our lecture. no need for mention them on the references. just relate the topic to our lecture and add in-text citation. (I HOPE THIS IS CLEAR).
please if you don’t understand anything, let me know.
