Today’s Most Pressing Environmental Issues

Today’s Most Pressing Environmental Issues
Currently, there exist many environmental issues that can affect human beings across the world. These issues are becoming increasingly common and some have a greater impact than others. Healthy People 2020 concentrates on six themes that encompass environmental health awareness. These are:
• Outdoor air quality
• Surface and ground water quality
• Toxic substances and hazardous wastes
• Homes and communities
• Infrastructure and surveillance
• Global environmental health
Using your module readings, answer the following:
• What, according to you, is the most critical environmental health issue today, either in the United States or globally?
Consider the following in your response:
• Identify the issue and explain why you believe it is a problem.
• Explain why this problem is the most pressing issue.
• Describe steps taken by environmental health professionals to address this problem.
• Give suggestions for correcting or limiting the problem.
Support your statements with scholarly references.
Write your initial response in approximately 200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
By Wednesday, February 26, 2014, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Saturday, March 1, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses, citing any points you had not previously considered or on which you disagree.

Hi Class,
For this discussion, we will examine environmental issues that you feel are important to you.
“Poor environmental quality has its greatest impact on people whose health status is already at risk. Therefore, environmental health must address the societal and environmental factors that increase the likelihood of exposure and disease” (Healthy People, n.d.).
I am looking forward to reading your responses.

EXAMPLE
Today’s Most Pressing Environmental Issues
by Marcus A. Flakes
Poor water quality appears to be the first and foremost environmental health issue today. According to previous research online and the module study, as well as the necessity for Water Quality Program Specialists, I realize it’s a challenging concern. Among all of the other global issues, water can possibly affect human health more quickly than any other environmental defect. The passage from the module study indicated, epidemiology is the study of disease and health conditions within a population that are linked with environmental health factors. The two factors that affect oral consumption are poor water quality and food safety.
My analysis in selecting poor water quality is based on the irrepressible disease outbreaks. For instance, humans can avoid food borne illness through the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), good hygienic practices and constant food safety training, especially in a monitored environment.
In comparison, poor water quality, on the other hand, is almost unmanageable at the consumption stage. It’s not a practical study or demonstrable strategy for most? that aren’t public health officials, which makes it harder to measure for good potable water in the general populations. Food Safety has a wider concentration, but coincidently, there are probable causes to larger concerns in regards to kitchen sanitation. Food residue that is rinsed into a drain goes into a wastewater system, which has created city ordinances across the nation to monitor watersheds and collect samples. Tom Wray, an Associate Editor of The National Provisioner, referenced a statement, “ “Drains need to be in the top list of the larger sanitation plan since drains are the one focal point where all the cleanup water moves into the wastewater ystem, ” says John E. Johnson, managing director of the Epsilon Industries consultant firm in Sioux City, S.D. ” ”(Wray, 2008).Once the surface of the drains are cleaned and the food is considered safe for consumption, it’s safe to say that consumers and public health officials are burdened with the inquiry an ecosystem that is contaminated by wastewater, such as grease traps. There are restaurants that fail to service their grease traps, so this insoluble mixture may also damage water supply.
In terms of managing programs for water quality, I’ve implemented some basic strategies to help manage and improve poor water quality: developing stronger occupational guidelines with regulatory enforcement in manufacturing plants: advise the public on how to maintain purified water in their homes: cities should produce periodic water samples at watersheds to promote a better ecosystem: city business services should provide training to facilities that consistently use grease traps and drains. The emphasis is on wastewater and what types of scientific studies can be used in today’s society for environmental issues.
According to the article, Human Impact on Water Quality, the scientific approach has probably been superseded by Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This merely means that informatics is more prevalent than the actual science and chemistry involved in the research process. “The scientific practices included in the activity are asking questions, developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations, engaging in argument from evidence, and communicating information.” (Shiang-Kwei, 2013). This philosophy, explains how the inquiry activities are approached, based on concepts and analysis. Previously, I presented my recommended program analysis for improving water quality, whereas, now, I feel more compelled to share Hui-Yin Hsu and Shiang-Kwei’s analysis on pg.37 for epidemiology methods on water improvement processes. This article presents the Information and Communication Technology (ICTs), expressed as new literacy, which has been used to conduct inquiries on water quality.
1. Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem.
2. Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems.
3. Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations. (Shiang-Kwei, 2013).
In conclusion, my personal suggestion is to provide the public, as well as businesses, a systemic approach in managing causes in public health: to create a cost efficient sustainable water service to the public: alert stakeholders on the importance of adhering to public health regulations: advertise purified water in food preparation, which may alternatively create good water conservation.
