Transcription and Analysis of Spoken Language

There are two sections to this assignment.
(1) (brief) Ideas for Project 2 [I have uploaded the project 2 in files]
Use the Project 2 instructions (in the "Projects" folder of Blackboard) to help you answer the following questions about your plan for Project 2.
What is your topic? Give some background.
What are you planning on using for your data?
With respect to your topic, what are some of the linguistic and sociocultural phenomena that you expect to focus on?
(2) (not-so-brief) Transcription and Analysis of Spoken Language
In this module’s lecture, I provided an example of how to make and use a transcript of video recorded language data. The example was an interview of the disgraced road racing cyclist and super athlete, Lance Armstrong. Using the video along with a transcript of it, I highlighted a number of asymmetries and other patterns that exist in the data. Specifically, I made the claim that Lance uses the content of his words along with the variation in his speech in order to create a somewhat convincing victim narrative to justify his disgraceful actions (i.e. using performance-enhancing drugs to win racing competitions). The primary analytical concept that I used was indexicality, as I showed that Lance uses a variety of linguistic resources to index different modes of thought, social identities, and values.
If we look at the bigger picture, we can see that athletes, politicians, and other famous media figures regularly account for their disgraceful actions without really apologizing. This seems to be a cultural practice, and we could therefore claim that the practice is evidence that such people form a community of practice. Indeed, theirs is a secluded cultural world that has relatively few members, but the few members share resources, such as lawyers, public relations experts, managers, and so on. More importantly, because they are media stars, most of their shared repertoire of practices involve ways of using language to relate to the public. If I were writing a paper for Project 2, I would build a thesis around the idea that the analysis of Lance’s interview provides descriptive detail of some of these practices.
For this section, you will do a little version of this kind of analysis. You will collect some language data, transcribe it, and do a little analysis of it. It would be to your benefit to use data that is relevant to your Project 2. To be sure, you can apply the data collection and analysis that you do here to your Project 2.
Here are the guidelines:
The data should be of people communicating with one another. You don’t have to record it. It doesn’t have to be a video recording of face-to-face communication either. For example, you could interview someone and record it, you could find a YouTube recording of someone telling a story, you could collect Facebook comments, or you might use questions and answers form a website forum.
The transcript should be at least half a page.
The transcript should be neatly formatted, like the Lance Armstrong transcript.
In your write up, do the following:
Provide background on the data (how did you collect it? who are the people? what are they doing? is the data relevant to your Project 2 topic? why did you choose it?)
Identify at least one asymmetry or other pattern in the data.
Provide some details from the transcript as you describe the pattern.
Use an analytical concept to guide your interpretation of the pattern. (Make sure to name and define the analytical concept.)
