Assignment 1:
Transcription Guidelines.

Transcription is usually regarded as part of the analytically process. Where you have conducted a number of interviews, the analysis is facilitated by having it in text format rather than just orally, on tape.   Certain kinds of qualitative analysis can be undertaken using computer software where the material has been transcribed. You should aim to transcribe as much information as possible, including non-verbal material, as this informs the sense that is made of the interview; noting that they were ‘excited or enthusiastic’ or ‘defensive or uncomfortable’ may be useful to your analysis later on. You could use some or all of the following conventions:
(.)                            pause                     (no need to time pauses)
CAPS                     words in capitals are uttered louder eg:
A:            That’s what I SAID
Underlined            words uttered with added emphasis eg:
A:            It simply isn’t on
=                              at the end of speaker’s utterance and at start of next speaker’s
utterance; indicates the absence of a gap eg:
A:            Anyway Brian =
B:            = Okay, okay
(text)                     material in brackets inaudible or there is doubt about accuracy eg:
A:            I (couldn’t tell you) that
[text]                      additional information eg:
A:            Brian [the speaker’s brother] said
[ ]                            material deliberately omitted eg:
A:            I’m not sure about [ ] to be honest

So, if you have observed some emotion on the part of the interview:

“I was having the time of my life [laughing] …Mike and me went everywhere together. We were like brothers”

Remember that in this instance you are only transcribing the most RELEVANT 200 words of the interview. This material is selected on the basis of its relevance to the background or theoretical material: as outlined in the article specified in the assignment. You may need to add some notes to this transcript so as to make sure that the context is understood.     For example:

Whilst talking about his time mountaineering in New Zealand, Alan revealed a certain disdain for those who employed mountain guides. For him, such experiences were ‘fake’ rather than ‘real’:

Alan          It makes me sick when you hear some guys talk about their achievements in the mountains. Basically they were dragged up the f’in peak by the guide, they didn’t plan or find the route themselves . er um. they didn’t need to think for themselves . That ain’t the way to do it. It’s not REAL.

Best of luck!
