Extra! Extra! Communicate all about it!
In today’s media-rich world, verbal and nonverbal cues pass by your eyes or ears frequently through television screens, computer screens, newspaper, and radio. The amount of information with which you can be bombarded is almost overwhelming. As a result, you may not realize how the verbal and nonverbal cues are affecting your perception. Prepare to be a communication journalist and report on hidden communication signals that will inform the public about how important verbal and nonverbal cues are to interpersonal communication! This Application is all about picking up information through observing other people’s interactions and reporting your findings.
Questions about this assignment? Post them in the Contact the Instructor area on the left navigation bar. That way, everyone in the class will see, and benefit from, the instructor’s response.
To prepare for this Application:
Read Chapters 4 and 5 in Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times. What are some of the verbal and nonverbal cues with which you are most familiar?
View the Flash media “Verbal and Nonverbal Communication: First Date” located under Media in the Learning Resources. What verbal and nonverbal cues do you notice? What meaning do these cues have to each partcipant?
Choose and review one of the following communication scenarios:
The “Effective Listening” document located in the Learning Resources
A television show (preferably a drama or sitcom)
In the scenario you chose to review, consider the types of communication that all the people involved are displaying. How are they reacting to verbal and nonverbal cues?
Reflect on why they communicated in that manner. Was it easier to convey the message nonverbally rather than verbally? What factors contribute to the choice of methods for interpersonal communication? How was emotion conveyed by each of the participants?
The assignment:
Imagine that you are a newspaper reporter for your local paper. Write a 1- to 2-page article about the communication scenario you chose. In order to fully explain the nature and function of the verbal and nonverbal behavior you observe, include the following information:
Who was involved?
What happened?
Where did the communication happen and at what time of day?
What interpersonal communication did you observe (emotional, verbal, and nonverbal)? Give examples and connect your observations to the concepts in Chapters 4 and 5 of Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times.
Were all of the people involved successful at conveying their message to the other party? Why or why not?
