PSYCH 105 RESEARCH ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES:

OVERVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS

(AY 2014-2015 – updated August 12, 2014)

Research credits for Psychology 105 can be obtained in two ways: (1) serving as a participant in research conducted by the Psychology Department; (2) writing papers on specific research journal articles.  Please note that in order to serve as a participant in research you must be at least 18 years old on the day of your participation.

(1) Research Participation: Each hour of research participation counts as one research credit.  Research participation opportunities are found on the Psychology Department’s web page (https://psychology.wsu.edu) by selecting the Experiment Signups link from the left menu.

(2) Writing Papers: For those who do not wish to directly participate in research, credit can be earned by reading and summarizing specified research journal articles.  The list of articles will be provided to you by your Psychology 105 instructor.  Please ask your instructor for any information about accessing the articles in the WSU library, either through electronic collections or in hard copy publication, and about paper format and criteria for grading.

PSYCH 105 RESEARCH PARTICIPATION: SIGNUP PROCEDURES

ACCESS THE ONLINE SIGNUP SITE:

Go to the Psychology Department’s home page: https://psychology.wsu.edu

In the menu on the left of the screen, select “Undergraduate Studies”.

Then select the link to “Experiment Signups”.

1) Several instructional videos provide guidance on how to use the system.

2) Click on “Click Here to Access” to enter the Human Subject Pool system.

Your user id and password is not your WSU id and password, but unique for this system. For security purposes, user passwords will be automatically changed at the start of each semester. To obtain your password, please click the “Forgot Password?” link on the login page of the Human Subject Pool website, then enter your WSU email address. You will then receive an email with a link for you to click which will generate a second email containing your user id and password.

FIRST-TIME ACCESS:

The first time you enter the experiment signup system, you will be directed to the course selection page where you can select the courses which you will assign your credits.

Next you will be directed to your personal information page. Verify everything is accurate. You can return to this page from the main menu and make changes at any time.

You will then view a page informing you of the subject pool policies.

Finally, you will be directed to the prescreen questionnaire. Once you have completed the questionnaire, you will be directed to the main menu page.

SIGNING UP FOR RESEARCH:

From the main menu page, choose the View Available Studies link. You can browse live and online experiments to see what studies are available.

When you find a study you would like to participate in (depending on date and time, its description, and any restrictions), click on it to view the Study Information, then click View Time Slots for This Study.

Find the time slot that best fits your schedule, and click Sign Up to the right of it.

TAKING PART:

Once you have signed up, write it down (study number, time, location, researcher). This information will also be e-mailed to you.

Arrive before the scheduled time for the study. Studies begin promptly at the listed time.  If you arrive late you will not be able to participate.  Plan on arriving several minutes before the scheduled beginning of the experiment.

CANCELING:

Canceling an appointment and no shows
If you must cancel an appointment after you have signed up to participate in a research study, you should communicate this no later than 12 hours before the appointment.  If you fail to attend a scheduled appointment without notice, this will be recorded as a “no show”.

Canceling on the web: From the main menu of the online experiment web site select the link for “My Schedule / Credits”.   Sessions you have signed up for are listed under “Study Signups.”  Click the “Cancel?” button next to the session you want to cancel. Then verify that you are canceling the correct session and select “Yes, I want to cancel”.  If the Cancel button is unavailable, you are not allowed to cancel your participation.  This is most likely because you have already received credit or because you are within 12 hours of the session.

Canceling by email: Send an email message to psychsubjectpool@wsu.edu. Your email message must include the following information:

(1)        Name
(2)        WSU ID number
(3)        Class
(4)        Section number
(5)        Research study number
(6)        Date/Time of your appointment to participate

Consequences of “no shows”
If you complete your 3 credits of research participation without “no shows” you will receive 3 bonus extra credit points in addition to the 3 credits you earned by participation.

If you have one “no show” recorded you may continue to participate in research but will not receive the bonus points.

If you have a second “no show” recorded you will be locked out of the experiment signup system and will no longer be able to participate in research.  You must earn any required credits though the alternative research activity.

PSYCH 105 RESEARCH PARTICIPATION:
POLICIES TO REMEMBER

Double Credit: You cannot receive double credit for participating in the same research project twice, unless the study is a multi-phase study and it is described as a study that provides more than 1 credit.

Observing: If you report for a research appointment and find it objectionable, you may stop participating and merely observe. Whether you participate actively or just observe, you will receive the same debriefing by the researcher(s) and the same credits as you would otherwise.

Eligible Research: Research run by other departments in the University do not count towards your research credits for this class. You can participate in research conducted outside the department if you wish, but you will not get Introductory Psychology research credits for doing so.

Researcher Fails to Show Up: During a normal semester, departmental researchers run hundreds of research sessions. It is possible that sometime during the semester a researcher will fail to show up for research as scheduled. If the researcher fails to show for research that you signed up for immediately contact the faculty member who is supervising the research.  Staff in the Psychology Department Main Office (JT 233) can assist you in obtaining phone or e-mail addresses for the appropriate faculty research supervisors.  You can also find this information the Psychology Department web page.

If the experimenter failed to show up you will automatically receive research credit, and will be eligible to participate in that research project later for more credit.

If you made an error in the time and place of the experimental session you will receive no credit and will be given a “no show”.

Questions? If you believe you have not been given credit for research sessions in which you participated please contact the faculty member who is responsible for the research session.  This faculty member will be able to verify your participation.  Any problems, questions, or complaints can also be referred to your Psychology 105 instructor.  If your Psychology 105 instructor is unable to resolve a problem the issue will be directed to the Department Chair.

PSYCH 105 RESEARCH SUMMARY PAPERS:
GUIDELINES AND GRADING CRITERIA FOR SUMMARY PAPERS
Summary papers should include four parts that roughly parallel the format of the original articles (see below). You must describe the research in your own words, and cannot quote directly from the text.
Background and Rationale: Briefly introduce the article in this section, providing answers to the following questions: What problem(s) or question(s) in psychology does this research address?   Why was this an important question to address?
Methods: Outline the basic methods the researcher(s) used in conducting the research, answering the following questions: Who took part in the study as subjects?  What was/were the independent variable(s)? What was (were) the dependent variables?  Why did they use these particular variables?
Basic Findings: Briefly outline the findings. In doing this section, you need to avoid getting merely repeating the numerical information reported in the article.  You should do your best to summarize the results into simple statements of relationships between the independent variables(s) and the dependent variable(s), and emphasize those findings that are central to the research questions.
Implications: Outline the main conclusions as they relate to the original problem(s) the researchers defined, and as you discussed in the “Background & Rationale” section.
Format. Papers should be typed, single-spaced, with 1-inch margins and 12-point font, and 1-2 pages long.  Emphasis should be placed on quality and not quantity. Be sure to include your name, section number, ID number, and whether you are writing the paper for required or extra credit.
Grading Criteria.  All papers will be graded pass/fail by your instructor, based on how well you address all the questions and issues outlined above. Do not assume that any paper handed in will receive credit automatically. Those students who do not do a satisfactory job of addressing these questions will fail, and will receive no research credit for their effort. In order to receive credit, a student must rewrite the review, and resubmit it until he or she does receive credit.
Deadlines. You must turn in your paper(s) by the last regularly scheduled lecture before Closed Week.  Papers submitted after that date will not be accepted.
