IA1 assignment
Below are the four question that you need to answer correctly. You answer are expected to
relate to the literature I send you but you are also expected to take the opportunity to relate to
other sources as well.
Note that each question contains the following requirements, restriction:
“Your answer must be formulated in a text of maximum 500 words.
Insert illustrations/pictures/table if possible to illustrate better your point of view (this will not
be counted as text from the 500 words), and be careful with the references you chose to use,
they have to be reliable. ”
With the help of images, figures, graphs and tables you can strengthen your argument and
make your answers clearer to the reader.
As far as formatting applies to the body of the text you must use: Times New Roman, 12 pt,
single spacing, default margins.
Questions
Question 1. Information-architecture’s role
The purpose of the IA is to help users understand where they are, what they have found, what
is near and what to expect. In Garret (2008) elements are presented which work together to
give a good user experience when using a digital interface.
In this task you are expected to discuss the links between the different elements presented in
Garrett’s model based on an interface of a webpage or a digital service that you see/find
representative.
Garret emphasizes that the various planes that make up the model are closely connected with
each other. A dependence where a design choices and decisions often give a so-called “ripple
effect”.
So your task here is to from a very clear example show that Garrett (2008) terms as the ripple
effects are in line, correct. Your discussion must demonstrate the interaction and effects in
different plane in the model.
Question 2. The Web as platform
The Web is an important platform for the development of digital services and systems.
Development of applications with the web as a platform is providing both technical and user
challenges and opportunities.
CheckUP is an example of information system which the web platform is using for services
such as CheckuUPs concept. In a further development of the CheckUP a proposal for a
“community function/discussion forum” has been put on the table. Given that, lets assume
that we design and develop an application using the web as platform.
So your task here is to answer to the following question: Which platform features that come
with the development we have seen with Web 2.0, you would choose to highlight in the work
for designing a “community function/discussion forum” for CheckUP?

Question 3. Key concepts
Important information about the work of IA are caught in the challenges: How information is
categorized and structured; How information in different ways is represented and presented,
how users are given the opportunity to look through large amounts of information, and how
users search for information in various situations.
In Ding & Lin (2011), a special focus is to describe the work of IA as similar to the research
process methodology and understanding of user needs and situation which is key. This
starting points perspective we find it in user centred design (UCD).
So your task here is to (1) select one of the following use cases and discuss this. Your starting
point must be- witch different information behaviour, a person in this situation, uses to orient
themselves and find that which they seek (see Ding & Lin, 2011).
Select one of the following situations:
●Weekly Action at the supermarket
●Visit to Louisana
●Traffic Work for train or plane
● Mushroom picking walk
(2) Give also example of how the information behaviours you identify can materialize in terms
of functionality in a digital information area.
You have the figure here below, who shows how the dynamics of different digital information
surfaces can be understood and discussed, as support for your discussion.
Question 4. Cognitive Aspects
Interaction with information system sometimes sets our brain working and long term memory
to the test. In fact, the design of interfaces for interactive systems in part is about precisely
this. To minimize the need to keep so many things in your head and in the same time not to
have to remember exactly how you went about getting this done, even if you did not used the
system for a while.
So your task here is to to analyse CheckUP system from a memory perspective and identify
potential problems that could arise when a typical user of the system (patient) is dealing with
the system as it is meant to be used today.
In your analysis, you must include:
a)  example of memory-related phenomena that occurs in connection with the use of
individual CheckUp components (such as blood pressure sensor; web interface to
their personal health profile, etc.) in a given situation
b)  repeated use of the CheckUp set as an integrated system and used by a patient over
longer time (e.g. a few years).
To help you, here are some keywords and phrases taken from the literature (Johnson, 2014)
and partly linked to your study, CheckUp system:
working memory
•  help people remember the essential information from one moment to the next
•  continuous mode feedback
•  few calls to action
•  step by step instructions always visible
•  shallow menu hierarchies
long-term memory
•  how easy is it for the patient to recall what to do, between check-ups?
•  the system should indicate what the user has done and not done (yet)
