Methods of Uploading Pictures to a Computer from a Smartphone

Methods of Uploading Pictures to a Computer from a Smartphone
Introduction
Most of the photos today are taken by the Smartphones. However, these photos and videos take up a large space and quickly fill the limited phone space. Amazingly, the owners of these gadgets find it difficult to delete or edit these photos, and this may lead to the malfunction of the phone; the hanging aspect as most people say. Therefore, to free up the phone space and retrieve photos for future viewing, an alternative storage should be considered. Computers can be the appropriate alternatives. There are various ways by which a person can move photos to the computer from the smartphones. Some of these methods include the use of USB, MicroSD cards, emailing attachment, Bluetooth, and the transfer Apps. As such this paper discuss the various processes involved in transferring pictures from the phone to the computers while using these varied devices.
USB-cable
The commonly used method of transferring photos to the computers is the use of the USB-cable. Most cell phones today came with the USB cable that connects your device to the computer. As indicated in figure one below, the first step is to plug the phone into the computer using the right USB cable. Through this simple act, one can easily download the images from the phone and drag them to the computer for safe keeping. Once these two devices are connected, the phone prompts you to allow it to open its files on your computer, at this point you are required to confirm. At this point, you can open your device on the computer window and double click on the folder under the name DCIM. It is here that the camera folder is found in the smartphones. Make sure that you have opened all the images that you want to transfer after opening the camera folder. Other folders that use the camera app can also be accessed here; these include Facebook and WhatsApp. From here one can copy and paste any image they wish to have. It should also be noted that if someone is copying several images, the process may go slow. Other folders like download also contain some of the images. Important to note is the advancements in the smartphone technology. Backup services like Google Dives come already installed in the Android phones. It quietly uploads files in the background for quick access on other devices. These files can be easily accessed from the Google drive, and one should not worry about its safety since all the synced pictures are privately stored (Goadrich & Rogers, 2011).

Email attachment
One can easily use the email to transfer photos or images to a friend or family member. The first step in doing this is to create a new message and then sign up for your email account. While logged into your account click on the select the icon ‘attach file’ so that you can add a photo to the email. In the case of a Gmail account, one can capture an image just from the same menu. Once you have attached the photo, send the email. After few minutes you can check your inbox from the computer or another phone. One should also be aware of the limit of the file size that this service can accommodate. Typically, large files may not be sent through this service. Photos can as well be shared through services like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Tap on the photo you wish to share and then tap on the shared key. Then select the application that you would want to use and depend on the selected app; the photo is emailed or uploaded. If this device is not supported by your phone, you can always use a portable flash drive which directly connects a phone through the MicroSD –port (Gardner, 2011).

MicroSD Cards
Most smartphones enable its user to create an extra storage through the use of MicroSD card. This external storage card can help one save photos directly on it instead of the internal storage of the phone. It is always wise to save the application to the internal memory and store the photos and videos on the MicroSD though temporarily. Therefore, the pictures on the SD cards need to be transferred to the computer as soon as possible. If the smartphone does not support MicroSD; other options like ‘Leef Access MicroSD reader’ can be used to transfer the pictures to the MicroSD. The reader is inserted through the slots for secondary storage, and one can copy and paste photos once the card has been read from the phone. Apart from the MicroSD cards, one can utilize other external storage devices. For instance, one can plug in the external USB hard drive that is usually used in laptops and desktop to transfer large volumes of files. USB hard drives have different capacities depending on your need. For example, we can find 500MB and 1000MB hard drives in the market (Aldrich, 2010).
Bluetooth App
The Bluetooth device also makes it easy for one to transfer images from the smartphones to the computer although this works within limited distance; you don’t expect to transfer the photo to your computer or another device via Bluetooth while standing a mile away from it; it’s impossible. The process works by first making the phone discoverable after putting the Bluetooth on. Next, click on the Bluetooth icon on the computer; it can easily be found in the notification area. The next procedure is to select your phone on the Bluetooth File Transfer window. Then open it to locate the location of the photos to be transferred. Select all the photos you would want to move after selecting tap on the send option and immediately after moving the images turn off the phone Bluetooth. This is necessary because it helps in the battery to hold power as well as enabling it to last longer. Bluetooth is, however, very slow and one has to wait for a while transferring photos. Other apps can be downloaded from the phone’s playstore and would still function in a similar manner. The flash-share application can be used transfer photos or videos from one phone to another, and it works faster as compared to Bluetooth (Young, 2011).
The Transfer Apps
Some smartphones have applications that enable one to transfer their media files to the computer or other devices. The first step in doing this is to install this software on the computer; after installing, one can open it. When your application is opened, follow the instructions to move your photos or videos to the computer. One of such an application is the Samsung’s Kies Air app that helps one to move the pictures to the computer without the use of cables. Others apps that function in a similar manner can be downloaded from the play store. One of such an app is the File Expert app which can be downloaded for free. It enables one to transfer files from the phone to other phones or computer through the use of Wi-Fi, DLNA connections, and Bluetooth. Another useful app that can be freely downloaded is the Remote Multi Drive app. It enables one to connect the phone to several computers while using the same network. One can also utilize Wi-Fi Share app which has the capability of transferring large picture files since it lacks the limit for file size (Young, 2011).
