Transitioning from LPN to RN in America

Transitioning from LPN to RN in America

Why do you want to become an RN

I want to become a Registered Nurse to save lives. Ever since I was young, I have always been intrigued by the prospect of becoming a health professional. I thought that my dream was fulfilled when I became Licensed Practical Nurse but instead, I discovered s desire to learn more and expand the reach of my impact on the society.
Secondly, I think the career is challenging, and it offers unlimited possibilities for exposure. Each day I have the opportunity to meet a new patient with a unique condition (NC Board of Nursing). Therefore, it is a constant learning process. Unlike most careers, nursing has opportunities for growth since one is required to take part in regular courses to improve the level of skill.

Returning to school: What do you find most exciting and most intimidating?

The most exciting part about returning to school is learning more about the needs of the career and the patients. After completing my education, I know that more duties await me and nothing pleases me more than offering my help to patients (Havaei, MacPhee and Dahinten 563). Nurses are likened to guardian angels. It is very gratifying to people who are honestly compassionate like me.
I am concerned about the studying because I know that I have to cover a lot within a short period. However, I know that I am up to the task and I will be able to match the theory I have grasped with practicality. Challenges always precede good outcomes. Therefore, I am prepared to overcome the concerns.

Describe what you believe and understand to be the role of the RN.

A registered nurse has six main functions. The first one is primary care. A registered nurse is supposed to attend the needs of the patient in the absence of a doctor (Duncan & DePew 51). A registered nurse has knowledge on how to offer primary care to patients.
The role of a registered nurse also involves advanced cardiac life support. Cardiac support is the first care given to individuals who have just had cardiac arrest.
A registered nurse can also offer acute care. The care is given to patients who have suffered minor injuries and have small recurring conditions of illness.
In the case of management, a registered nurse is supposed to analyze the illness of an individual and directing it to the right doctor who is specialized in the desired mode of treatment.
Clinical experience is about managing the affairs of the hospital. For example, the nurse is supposed to urge the patience of the patients as the doctor makes his way.
Treatment planning requires the nurse to arrange for the visit schedules of patients. The nurse also arranges the schedule of doctors to align it with the patients.

In your own words, please explain the three legal differences between the LPN and RN roles (in the US).

The main difference is the fact that registered nurses are higher in rank than the licensed practical nurses. Therefore, registered nurses supervise the licensed practical nurses.
The level of qualification for the two types of nurses is different. A licensed practical nurse is supposed to attend nursing school for only a year. On the other hand, registered nurses are supposed to attend nursing school for three years.

Describe three specific ways your professional role will change by becoming an RN.

As a registered nurse, I will be able to check on the condition of patients and recommend some light medication. As a licensed practicing nurse, I am not able to check on the patients (Duncan & DePew 156). Secondly, a registered nurse is able to coordinate with the doctors concerning the condition of the patients. LPN’s do not have the authority and the clearance to discuss patient matters. Finally, as a registered nurse, I am able to offer psychological and medical support to the patients.

Describe your three best strengths as an LPN that will assist you in transitioning to the role of the RN.

My main strength is empathy, and it would fit well in my new role. A registered nurse has more interactions with patients and empathy would help in the counseling sessions. The patients need to understand that the physician understands their plight and condition.
Secondly, as an LPN, I am a good listener, and I follow instruction diligently. Therefore, am suited for the role of registered nurse because I can capture the condition of a patient appropriately to find the right remedy (Duncan & DePew 54).
Thirdly, I am good timekeeper and attend to my appointments and duties on time. A good nurse is conscious of time because small moments of time lost could damage or put the life of a patient in danger.

Identify at least three areas of weakness that you currently have in nursing knowledge/skills and identify a specific plan for how you will work on improvement in those areas.

I have a weakness in communication skills. I do not express myself enough, and it affects my relationship with fellow colleagues. As a registered nurse would try to improve communication to improve my interaction with colleagues for the benefit of the patients.
Secondly, I am not able to handle too much pressure. In a hospital situation, the pressure is high, and I must learn to deal with it to be a competent registered nurse (Duncan & DePew 45).
Thirdly, I do not have enough initiative, and it affects my level of performance. As registered nurse, I would need to involve myself more in matters without guidance by senior medical staff.

Please identify three ways in which you can use the change process effectively in transitioning from LPN to RN ( in the US)

The first way is education. The transition is improved by gathering as much information as a possible. Secondly, I would increase the level of consultation and mentorship. People who have made the change should guide others who are following that path. Thirdly, I would include experience as one of the requirements for registered nurses. An experienced LPN should not have to go to school for a three-year period to become a registered nurse.
