Part I: Age, Gender and Marital Status are important determinants of human behaviour.
a) Choose some behaviour, or belief which is of interest to you and in approximately one paragraph describe how this issue is related to Age, Gender and/or Marital Status. (6 Marks)
b) State several inter-related hypotheses about your issue, that you would like to examine. (10 Marks)
c) Provide some substantiation for your hypotheses, i.e. a theoretical / empirical basis.
i.e. go to the library; use the internet, check course texts etc. (12 Marks)
d) Identify the variables mentioned in your hypotheses and draw a simple path model showing their relationships to one another. (15 Marks)
Part II: Choose 4 of the variables identified in Part I and indicate how you would operationalize them. State your measurement strategies as precisely as you can.
(Use each of the three major operationalization strategies [i.e. “look, ask, existing data”] at least once. ) Your selection/operationalization should include one variable which is operationalized at each level of the 4 levels of measurement ( Nominal, Ordinal, Interval and Ratio).
Identify which is at each level of measurement. (20 Marks)
Part III: a) Discuss the issue of reliability with respect to each of the measurement strategies selected in Part II. . (10 Marks)
b) Discuss the issue of validity with respect to each of your measurement strategies. (10 Marks)
Part IV: Imagine that you have been awarded a small research grant ($13,000) to carry out your investigation. Identify the practical, ethical and political issues involved in the implementation of your research design. (17 Marks)
