Each student will perform a research project relating to a code or inspection failure which led to a change in either the codes surrounding the project or the inspection process.
There is no requirement that the topic be specifically related to fire or egress codes. Topics to explore can include, but are not limited to, major fires, structural failures (both during and post construction), and others as approved by the instructor.
This project will be submitted and graded in several phases. A schedule is provided with the associated due dates. This project’s goal is to teach the research process from inception through presentation. Phases will include: topic selection, outline submittal, and final paper submission.

Note that there is no requirement to use all of the above sections. There is also no minimum requirement on the number of pages. There is a maximum of 20 pages. All papers are to be typed in 12 pt, double spaced, Arial font (standard margins).
APA formatting should be used for all citations and the general paper format. Additional information on the APA style can be found on Blackboard. You are required to utilize a minimum of 5 sources for the project.
Research Phases Outline
Topic Selection (5%) – Due Friday, February 1, 2013.
All topics must be approved by the instructor. As part of your proposal, you will provide a brief overview of the event and code changes, a minimum of two sources utilized, and an explanation of your interest in the event. Please note that the Station Nightclub Fire will not be accepted.
Outline (10%) – Due Friday, March 1, 2013.
A formal outline must be submitted by Friday, March 1, 2013. The outline should include the theme as well as a methodical outline of the proposed topics and layout of the paper. Outlines should not be more than one page in length.
Rough Draft with Reviewer Comments (20%) – Due April 1, 2013.
A rough draft of your research paper shall be submitted on April 1, 2013.. The rough draft should resemble a completed paper. While the formatting, sentence structure, etc. may have work left to be completed, all main parts of the paper should be there. The rough draft will have been read by at least one reviewer with written comments noted on the page. The reviewer will be someone in the class. I will provide a reviewer sheet for them to fill out when the review of your paper is complete. Please note that you will be graded on both the integration of your reviewers’ notes, as well as the depth of comments made on other classmates’ papers.
Final Paper (40%) and Presentation (25%) – Due April 19, 2013
Final papers are due April 19, 2013. Presentations will be given between 4/29/13 and 5/3/13. A signup sheet will be provided at a later date. Students shall prepare a brief 10 minute presentation on the code/process that was affected by their topic and the implications carried through the current day codes and standards. The presentation should also include a brief overview of the event that brought about changes in the codes and standards.
